Quoting for cabinet makers and joiners

Kitchens, vanities, laundries and built-in robes are quoted by the run of cabinets, the drawer banks, the benchtop and the days to install. Customers bring a sketch, a photo of someone else's kitchen and a budget. Quote Desk lets you price the sketch from your list at their kitchen bench and send it before they visit the next maker.

What gets in the way for cabinet makers and joiners

The design keeps moving

One more drawer bank, a pantry instead of a broom cupboard, a different handle. Each change is a new price. A quote that lists the runs and the drawer count is quick to send again, and the old one stays as it was, so nobody argues about which version was agreed.

Benchtops from another trade

Stone tops are often templated and cut by someone else after your cabinets are in. Say on the quote whether the benchtop is yours or theirs, and who books the template, or the gap shows up on install day.

Flat-pack on the other side of the table

The customer has priced a kitchen from a flat-pack store. Lines for soft-close hardware, a 2-pac finish and the install show what the difference in price buys.

The check measure

You price from a site measure, then check-measure once the walls are finished. Say in the note that anything that changes at the check measure is quoted separately, so a wall that moved is a variation, not your loss.

A worked example

Cabinet maker work, with Quote Desk

Suppose a fictional workshop, Quince Street Cabinets, two makers and a van. Price list: base cabinets in 2-pac $1,150 per linear metre, overhead cabinets $780 per linear metre, three-drawer bank with soft-close runners $520 each, tall pantry $1,650 each, laminate benchtop $260 per linear metre, remove old kitchen $650 each, installation $1,100 a day for two people.

A customer forwards an email with a sketch of an L-shaped kitchen and a photo of one she liked. The maker measures on site: five metres of base cabinets, three of overheads, two drawer banks and a pantry. Quote this: base x5, overhead x3, drawer bank x2, pantry x1, benchtop x5, removal x1, installation x2. The note says the price includes GST; 2-pac in one colour from the standard range; soft-close hinges and runners throughout; plumbing, electrical, splashback and appliance install by others; a check measure once the walls are finished, with anything that changes then quoted separately; 50 per cent deposit on acceptance and the balance on install; the price holds for 30 days. Total $14,930. Sent from the driveway.

He presses Follow up automatically. The customer accepts on day ten, after the third reminder. Halfway through the build she asks for a wine rack in place of one overhead cabinet. That is a new one-line quote, accepted the same day, and the kitchen quote stays exactly as it was accepted.

Questions from cabinet makers and joiners

Can I quote by the linear metre?

Yes. Add the item with metre as its unit. Quantities are whole numbers, so either price whole metres or put an odd run on as a typed-in line with its own price.

Where do I put the deposit?

In the note. Quote Desk does not take money, so the note sets out the deposit and when the balance is due, and the customer accepts those terms with the price.

The customer wants to compare two door finishes. How do I quote that?

Send two quotes, one per finish, each with its own accept link. The customer accepts the one they choose, and the quotes page shows both under their name.
