Quoting for insulation installers

Insulation is quoted by the square metre, by product and R-value, for the ceiling, the walls or under the floor, with old insulation out and downlight covers on top. The customer has seen a price per square metre online. Quote Desk sets out the area, the product, the removal and the access as lines, so the quote shows what the online price leaves out.

What gets in the way for insulation installers

Comparing R-values

One quote is R4.0 batts, another R5.0, a third is blown in. Naming the product and the R-value on each line lets the customer compare like with like and see why the thicker batt costs more.

Old insulation has to come out

A ceiling full of old, dirty or chewed insulation needs it removed first. A removal line by the square metre keeps that work on the quote instead of in an unpaid afternoon.

Low roofs and tight access

A low-pitched roof or a shallow crawl space under the floor is slow work. A line for difficult access, named, explains why two houses of the same size are priced differently.

Downlights and what is in the roof

Downlights, cabling and a small manhole all slow the job down. Lines for downlight covers and a sentence in the note about what you found in the roof space keep the price honest.

A worked example

Insulation installer work, with Quote Desk

Suppose a fictional pair of installers, Woolshed Insulation. Price list: R5.0 ceiling batts supply and install $24 per square metre; R4.0 ceiling batts $21 per square metre; R2.5 wall batts for new builds $18 per square metre; R2.0 underfloor batts $32 per square metre; remove and dispose of old ceiling insulation $14 per square metre; downlight cover $22 each; low-pitch roof access $250 per job.

A homeowner forwards an email: a 1960s house that is cold in winter, with insulation she thinks is thin. In the roof the installer finds 110 square metres of ceiling with old, dirty batts, twelve downlights and a low pitch at the back. Quote this: remove old insulation x110, R5.0 ceiling batts x110, downlight covers x12, low-pitch access x1. The note says the price includes GST; the old insulation is bagged and taken away; covers go on the twelve downlights shown; any damaged wiring found in the roof is reported to the owner, and work stops until her electrician has looked at it; one day on site. Total $4,694. Sent from the street.

He presses Follow up automatically, and the customer accepts after the first reminder. A month later she asks about under the floor. A second quote, underfloor batts x75, $2,400, is accepted the same week.

Questions from insulation installers

How do I quote two R-values for the customer to choose from?

Two quotes, one per product, each with its own accept link. Or one quote with the product you recommend and a sentence in the note giving the price of the other.

Can I show a rebate?

Quote Desk takes no negative lines. Quote the price after any rebate and set the rebate out in the note, or quote the full price and explain the rebate there. The total is always the sum of the lines.

Does Quote Desk know the rules for working in roof spaces?

No. It sends your lines and note and checks nothing. Check the licence requirements in your state for the work you quote.
