Quoting for roofers

A roofer quotes from a ladder, a drone photo or the ground with a tape and some experience. The customer is usually standing under a leak and wants a number today. Quote Desk turns the number into a sent quote with an accept link while you are still in the street.

What gets in the way for roofers

The leak that will not wait

Storm season fills the phone. The first roofer with a readable quote and an accept button gets the job. A quote emailed from the driveway beats one typed up that night.

What is under the tiles

You cannot see rotten battens or perished sarking until the tiles are off. The quote needs a fixed price for what you can see and a sentence about the rest. The note is for that sentence.

Insurance jobs and paperwork

An insurer or an owner's corporation wants it in writing with each item listed. Lines with quantities and prices do that without a separate document.

Height and access

Scaffold, edge protection and a boom lift are real costs that customers do not see. A line for each, named, stops the customer thinking the price is padding.

A worked example

Roofer work, with Quote Desk

Think of a fictional roofing business, Ridgeline Roofing, with a crew of three. Price list: call-out and inspection $160 each, tile replacement per tile $18, ridge capping re-bed and re-point per metre $65, valley iron replacement per metre $120, gutter replacement per metre $68, edge protection per day $380, sarking per square metre $14.

An enquiry arrives through their website form (they are on Crew) describing a leak above the bathroom after a storm. The roofer inspects, finds eleven cracked tiles and twelve metres of ridge capping that has let go. Quote this: inspection x1, tile replacement x11, ridge capping per metre x12, edge protection per day x1. Note: price includes GST, matching second-hand tiles where available, work weather permitting within seven days. Total $1,518. Sent from the ute. Accepted from the customer's kitchen within the hour.

A full re-roof goes out as a longer quote with a typed-in line for the new roof sheets and a note that any replacement of battens found rotten is charged per metre at the rate stated. He presses Follow up automatically because re-roofs take people a week to decide.

Questions from roofers

Can I quote a repair I have not fully inspected?

Quote what you can see as fixed lines and say in the note what is excluded and what rate applies if more is found. If the scope changes, send a second quote; the customer accepts the new one on their phone.

Do customers need to print anything?

No. The quote is an email and a page on their phone. Insurers and property managers who want a copy can be forwarded the email.
