Quoting for water damage restorers

Water damage work starts as an emergency and ends as a drying job measured in days: extraction by the square metre, air movers and dehumidifiers by the unit per day, monitoring visits and the underlay that cannot be saved. Quote Desk puts each part on a line, so the homeowner, and often their insurer, can see what the drying will cost before day three.

Air movers, 6 units for 4 days$840.00
Dehumidifiers, 2 units for 4 days$600.00

Forwarded to the insurer, then accepted on the homeowner's phone.

What gets in the way for water damage restorers

The emergency comes first

A burst pipe at midnight needs the water out now, not a quote later in the week. A short quote for the call-out and the extraction, accepted on the homeowner's phone in the doorway, gets you started with the price agreed.

Drying days you cannot know yet

Nobody knows on day one whether a room dries in three days or six. Quote the days you expect, put the daily cost of the equipment in the note, and the extra days are already priced.

When an insurer is paying

An insurer's assessor looks for each piece of work with a quantity and a rate. Lines do that without a separate document, and the homeowner can forward the quote straight on.

Carpet: dry it or bin it

Soaked underlay is often replaced, and the carpet may or may not be saved. Lines for uplift and disposal now, and a separate quote for relaying later, let the customer see both paths and decide.

A worked example

Water damage restorer work, with Quote Desk

Picture a fictional two-van restorer, Pumphouse Restoration. Price list: after-hours emergency call-out $220 each, water extraction $9 per square metre, air mover $35 per unit per day, dehumidifier $75 per unit per day, moisture monitoring visit $120 each, underlay uplift and disposal $12 per square metre, antimicrobial treatment $6 per square metre.

Near midnight a homeowner rings: a flexi hose under the kitchen sink has burst and 36 square metres of living-room carpet is soaked. The restorer takes her email on the call and sends the first quote from the doorway. Quote this: call-out x1, extraction x36, underlay uplift x36. The note says the price includes GST and that drying is quoted separately once the water is out. Total $976. She accepts it on her phone, and the extraction starts.

The next morning he takes moisture readings and sends the drying quote: air movers x24 (six machines for four days), dehumidifiers x8 (two for four days), monitoring visits x3, antimicrobial treatment x36. The note says the price includes GST; four drying days are expected; each extra day with the same equipment is $360; relaying the carpet is quoted once the floor is dry. Total $2,016. The homeowner forwards it to her insurer, the assessor reads the lines, and she presses Accept this quote that afternoon.

Questions from water damage restorers

How do I quote drying when I do not know how many days it will take?

Quote the days you expect, with machines times days as the quantity, and write the daily cost of the same equipment in the note. If it runs longer, the extra days are at a rate the customer has already accepted.

Can the insurer accept the quote?

The quote goes to the email you enter, usually the homeowner's. They can forward it to the insurer, and the accept link works for whoever opens it, so agree with the homeowner who will press the button.

Should the emergency work and the drying be one quote?

Two works better. The emergency quote is accepted at the door so you can start; the drying quote follows once you have measured, with the equipment and the days set out.
