Quoting for glaziers

A glazier's day is a broken pane at nine, a shower screen measure at eleven and a splashback after lunch. Each is priced by the square metre of a kind of glass, plus the call-out, the measure and the fit. Quote Desk keeps the rate for each glass on your list, so the quote is the measurement and the right picks.

What gets in the way for glaziers

Made to measure means two visits

Toughened glass is made to order after you measure, so most jobs are a measure, a wait and a fit. A quote that says so, with the lead time in the note, stops the customer expecting it fitted tomorrow.

Boarding up tonight, glass next week

A smashed window after a break-in is an after-hours call-out and a board, then a proper quote for the glass. Two quotes, one for tonight and one for the replacement, keep the urgent part from holding up the rest.

The glass is the price

Clear float, toughened, laminated, tinted, double glazed: the same opening can cost several times as much depending on the glass. Name the glass on the line so the customer compares like with like.

Insurance paperwork

Storm and break-in jobs often end up with an insurer. Itemised lines with the glass type and size give the assessor what they ask for, without a separate write-up.

A worked example

Glazier work, with Quote Desk

Consider a fictional glazier, Silvereye Glass, one van and an offsider. Price list: call-out and measure within 20 kilometres $140 each, after-hours call-out $260 each, temporary board-up $95 per opening, 6.38 millimetre laminated glass supply and fit $310 per square metre, 4 millimetre clear float glass supply and fit $160 per square metre, remove and dispose of broken glass $80 each, frameless shower screen with a fixed panel and door $1,650 each.

A customer forwards an email about a cracked lounge-room window. The glazier measures the pane at 1.2 by 1.5 metres, which is 1.8 square metres; quantities are whole numbers, so it goes on as 2. Quote this: call-out x1, laminated glass x2, remove broken glass x1. The note says the price includes GST, the glass is cut to size with about five working days' lead time, and the existing frame is reused with new beads and putty. Total $840. Sent from the front path. Accepted before the van has left the street.

While he is there, the customer asks about the ensuite. A second quote: frameless shower screen x1 and a typed-in line to remove the old framed screen at $120. Total $1,770. He presses Follow up automatically, and the customer accepts on day five.

Questions from glaziers

The pane is 1.8 square metres. How do I quote that?

Quantities are whole numbers, so put it on as 2 square metres, or price the pane as one typed-in line at its own figure. Either way, give the size in the line or the note.

Can I quote a board-up and the replacement together?

You can, but two quotes work better: the board-up accepted on the night, and the glass quoted once you have measured. Each has its own accept link.

An insurer wants a copy. Can I send it to them?

The quote goes to the customer's email, and they can forward it. The lines and the note show the glass type and size the assessor will look for.
