What gets in the way for bricklayers
Per thousand, but which thousand
Face bricks, commons and feature work go up at different speeds. A rate per thousand for each on your list shows the builder why a feature panel costs more than the back wall of the garage.
Who supplies the bricks and sand
Labour only, or supply and lay. If the quote does not say who orders the bricks, the sand and the cement, the first delivery day turns into a phone argument.
Cleaning down
Washing the brickwork down at the end is real work that customers forget. A line for it per square metre means it is paid for rather than done as a favour.
Waiting on other trades
Brickwork follows the slab and the frame, and it waits on the weather. Say in the note that the start depends on the site being ready, so a week lost to someone else is not on you.
A worked example
Bricklayer work, with Quote Desk
Think of a fictional crew, Red Kiln Bricklaying, two bricklayers and a labourer. Price list: face brick, labour only $1,350 per thousand; feature brickwork, labour only $1,800 per thousand; concrete blockwork, labour only $75 per square metre; brick pier $240 each; clean down $8 per square metre; letterbox pier, supply and lay $650 each.
A builder forwards plans for a single-storey brick veneer house. The bricklayer counts from the plans: 11,000 face bricks, 2,000 in the feature panels at the front, four piers on the porch and 180 square metres of wall to clean down. Quote this: face brick x11, feature brickwork x2, piers x4, clean down x180. The note says the price includes GST; labour only, with bricks, sand, cement, ties and scaffold supplied by the builder; the count is from plans revision C, and bricks over the count are charged at the same rate per thousand; the start is once the frame is up and the site is clear. Total $20,850. Sent from the ute that evening. The builder accepts the next morning.
A homeowner down the street asks for a letterbox pier. One line, $650 supply and lay, sent from the footpath and accepted the same day.

Questions from bricklayers
Can I quote per thousand bricks?
Yes. Make the unit "thousand" on your price list and set the quantity to the number of thousands. Quantities are whole numbers, so 10,500 bricks goes on as 11, or as 10 with the odd 500 on a typed-in line of its own.
How do I quote labour only?
Say so on the line, for example face brick, labour only, and list in the note what the builder supplies: bricks, sand, cement, ties, scaffold. The customer accepts the split with the price.
Can I price from the builder's plans before I see the site?
Yes. Say in the note which plans you counted from, and that bricks over the count are charged at the same rate. If the plans change, send a new quote.
