What gets in the way for fencing contractors
Two neighbours, one fence
A dividing fence often has two people paying for it, each wanting their own price in writing. Two quotes, one to each neighbour for their share and each with its own accept button, save you being the go-between.
The old fence has to go
Pulling out and carting away an old paling fence takes time and a trailer. Customers who only hear the new-fence price assume removal is in it. A per-metre removal line makes sure it is paid for.
Slopes and rock
Thirty level metres and thirty stepped metres down a slope are not the same job, and neither is a post hole in clay against one in rock. Lines on the list for stepping and core drilling keep the price honest when the ground is hard work.
Colour and height after the yes
A neighbour's opinion can change the colour or the height after the first yes. The note is where you say which colour and height you priced, so any change is a new quote rather than a quarrel at the fence line.
A worked example
Fencing contractor work, with Quote Desk
Imagine a fictional two-person crew, Kingfisher Lane Fencing. Price list: 1.8 metre steel sheet fence supply and install $105 a metre, 1.8 metre treated pine paling fence $125 a metre, remove and dispose of old paling fence $22 a metre, stepping on sloping ground $45 per panel, core drilling into rock $65 per post, 900 millimetre steel pedestrian gate $560 each.
Two neighbours want their 32 metre back boundary replaced in steel sheet and have agreed to split the cost. One of them forwards the email. The fencer measures, finds enough fall to step six panels, and builds two quotes, one for each neighbour's half, typing in the second neighbour's name and email by hand. Quote this: steel sheet fence x16, remove old fence x16, stepping x3. The note says the price includes GST; this is your half of a 32 metre dividing fence and the other half has been quoted to your neighbour; the colour is as agreed from the standard range; work starts once both halves are accepted; the price holds for 30 days. Total $2,167 each. Both are sent from the footpath.
The first neighbour accepts within the hour. The second takes nine days and two reminders, then accepts. Both quotes now sit under Won, and the job is booked. A week after it is finished, the first neighbour asks for a side gate: one line, $560, sent from the ute and accepted the same evening.

Can I quote per metre and per panel on the same quote?
Yes. Each list item has its own unit, so a per-metre fence, a per-panel stepping charge and a gate priced each sit on one quote. Round part metres up to the whole metre.
What if I hit rock?
Put a per-post core drilling item on your list and say in the note that rock is charged at that rate if you find it. If you already know there is rock, put the posts on that line from the start.
