Quoting for floor sanders and polishers

Floor sanding is quoted by the square metre, with the finish, the number of coats, the stairs and the repairs moving the price. Customers compare one per-metre figure across three quotes. Quote Desk sets out the sanding, the coats, the treads and the board repairs as lines, so the comparison is made on what each quote actually includes.

What gets in the way for floor sanders and polishers

Three coats or two

A cheaper rate per metre is often one coat fewer or a different finish. Naming the coats and the finish on the line shows the customer what they are comparing.

Stairs are not floor

Treads and risers are hand work, priced per step. A stair line of its own stops the customer measuring the staircase as floor area and expecting the floor rate.

What turns up under the carpet

Staples, glue, stains, a patch of borer, boards someone replaced with the wrong timber. Say in the note what the price includes and your per-board rate for repairs found once the carpet is up.

Off the floor for days

The finish needs time before furniture goes back. The note is where you say how long, so the customer plans to be elsewhere and does not walk on it the next morning.

A worked example

Floor sander work, with Quote Desk

Take a fictional owner and offsider, Honeygrain Floor Sanding. Price list: sand and coat, satin water-based, three coats $48 per square metre; staple and carpet residue removal $6 per square metre; stair treads and risers $85 per step; replacement floorboard $65 each; stain coat $12 per square metre; gap filling $9 per square metre.

A customer forwards an email: the carpet in her two-storey townhouse is coming up, and she wants the boards underneath done. The sander measures 52 square metres downstairs, counts 14 steps, and finds three boards that will need replacing. Quote this: sand and coat x52, staple removal x52, stairs x14, replacement boards x3. The note says the price includes GST; satin water-based finish, three coats; carpet lifted and taken away by the owner before the start; three boards replaced as shown, and any more found at $65 each; the house empty for the job; light foot traffic from the day after the last coat, furniture back after three days. Total $4,193. Sent from the hallway.

He presses Follow up automatically. The customer has two other quotes, one of them a lower rate per metre for two coats. She accepts on day five, after the second reminder, and when she rings to book, the line that says three coats is the one she mentions.

Questions from floor sanders and polishers

Can I quote two finishes for the customer to choose from?

Send two quotes, one for each finish, each with its own accept link. If you switch on follow-ups, do it on one of them, so the customer gets one set of reminders.

How do I quote stairs?

Add a per-step item to your list and set the quantity to the number of steps. A landing can go on the square-metre line.

What about repairs I cannot see until the carpet is up?

Quote the repairs you can see, put your per-board rate in the note, and send a second quote for anything more once the boards are bare. The customer accepts it on their phone before you start.
